Building a Family, a Business and a City to Sustain Them All
G.T. Bynum, Your City Councilor
G.T. Bynum is the current Tulsa City Councilor in Council District 9. G.T. has been prepared for service on the Tulsa City Council by a unique blend of leadership experience.
United States Senate
G.T. spent six years working in the United States Senate for Senators Don Nickles and Tom Coburn.
During his time with Senator Nickles, G.T. worked in both the Washington and Tulsa offices. While Senator Nickles entrusted G.T. with a number of important objectives (such as funding the development and maintenance of the Kerr-McClellan Navigational System, which leads to the Tulsa Port of Catoosa), perhaps none was as monumental as federal efforts related to the Tar Creek Superfund Site – the nation’s largest toxic waste site, located in Northeast Oklahoma. At the senator’s direction, G.T. worked behind the scenes with local leaders and federal officials to determine the true scope of the problem and bring about a solution to the decades-old problem.
Dealing with a disaster of this size prepared G.T. for his service on the staff of Senator Tom Coburn when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. Anticipating a massive federal response, and out of concern that funds spent on such a response be used effectively, G.T. represented Senator Coburn in the creation of legislation with Democratic Senator Barack Obama to create a single oversight entity for the response. This bipartisan legislation drew broad support from leaders of both parties and resulted in President Bush appointing a “czar” to oversee federal expense related to the recovery. During his time with Senator Coburn, G.T. also coordinated efforts to combat wasteful appropriations and fight the sale of nuclear technology and secrets to China.
In college, G.T. had the opportunity to work for Governor Frank Keating and at the School District of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
American Red Cross
G.T. brought his talent for crisis management to the Tulsa Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. During his time there, he responded to numerous home and apartment fires and kept residents of Northeast Oklahoma updated on the Red Cross response to the January 2007 ice storms – a national response which at the time was the largest sheltering operation in Tulsa Red Cross history.
Tulsa Businessman
G.T. served on the management team for Williams & Williams Worldwide Real Estate Auction. Williams & Williams is a national real estate firm based in Tulsa that averages over 1000 home sales every single month throughout all 50 states. During G.T.’s time with the company, the Tulsa Metro Chamber noted Williams & Williams as one of the fastest-growing employers in the city.
G.T. went on to found Capitol Ventures Government Relations, a Tulsa-based firm that assists Oklahoma entities with federal advocacy.
Community Activism
G.T. feels strongly about giving back to our community, and has done so through service on the boards of directors for the Tulsa Historical Society and Leadership Tulsa. He views these as opportunities to learn from and honor Tulsa’s past while developing the leaders of Tulsa’s future. G.T. is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma. He has also served on the Executive Committee of the Tulsa County Republican Party, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Tulsa. G.T. earned his Eagle Scout designation in high school as a member of Troop 73.
Family
G.T. and his wife, Susan, are the proud parents of Robert and Annabel – the sixth generation of Bynums to call Tulsa home.
